Head of PE: ‘Degree opened up lots of opportunities’

Jack Lumbard is Head of Physical Education at St Philip Howard Catholic School. He graduated the PE and Sports Coaching (PESC) degree in 2015.

Can you tell us about your job role now?

I have been a PE teacher for seven years and I鈥檓 currently an acting Head of Department.鈥

Do you think your degree helped you land your job, and how do you think it helped?鈥

The degree opened up lots of opportunities, the QTS was not available when I applied as I would have done that. But doing PESC allowed me to think about lots of different job opportunities before deciding what I already knew to become a teacher.

Can you tell us about your experience at the University? What did you love about the course and Chichester?

At Chichester you are known, it鈥檚 sometimes a good thing sometimes a bad thing. But the lecturers don’t think of you as a number on the course. You get support and help to work on yourself as a professional but also work on yourself maturing to become a better version of yourself.鈥

Why did you decide to study at Chichester?

I wanted the independence University offered but didn’t want to venture too far away from the family home. Also, if you want to be a PE teacher 黑料大湿Posts is where we all seem to come from!

What are your hopes for the future in your career?

Keep on learning, you are never perfect – in education and every day is different.鈥

What advice do you have for someone considering University who may want to follow a similar career path?

Do it. None of my friends were going to university from college and I easily could have decided not to go. I stuck to it and met new friends with similar interests. Teaching isn’t easy, but the good days completely outweigh the challenging ones. If you want to be a teacher, get yourself in schools as much as you can. Teaching assistants, cover supervisors, learning support assistants, the more experience you have of working with young children the easier that trainee year will feel.

Is there anything else you’d like to add?

University sport is the best you will play. I have been lucky to play good standard of rugby in my time, but nothing will live up to the fun you have playing for your University team… and maybe the socials after.鈥
